Set up since 1981, membership of the YLDC has increased from 29 to 42, comprising 29 elected members, 7 appointed members and 6 ex-officio members who are Chairmen of the Rural Committees. The Chairman and Vice-chairman are elected amongst the members. There are 6 Committees under YLDC, namely Culture, Recreation and Sports Committee, Environmental Improvement Committee, Finance Committee, Social Services, Housing and Publicity Committee, Town Planning and Development Committee and Traffic and Transport Committee. They will advise the Government of local views and concerns relating to environmental problems, transport facilities, town planning and provision of social services within the District and act as a bridge between the government and residents in Yuen Long. For the year 2004-2005, the Government has allocated $12,700,000 to YLDC. The Council will make good use of this fund to promote community involvement and implement improvement works to enhance the quality of life of local residents.
